Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

Dear readers, it’s time to stop the old story that doing things for ourselves is selfish or takes away from others. Picture the saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” This wisdom is more relevant than ever in today’s hustle culture.

I teach Mental Health First Aid, a training that helps adults recognize and respond to mental health and substance use challenges—much like first aid teaches wound care until advanced medical help arrives. What drew me to this work is its focus on prevention and early detection. While not all illnesses can be prevented, we can do a lot to protect ourselves. That’s where self-care comes in.

Self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and spa days—though those are great! It’s about:

  • Setting boundaries
  • Getting enough rest
  • Nourishing your body
  • Prioritizing activities that bring you joy
  • Listening to your mind and body with the same compassion you’d offer a friend

In my work, I often hear people feel guilty about prioritizing well-being. But here’s the truth:

  • Self-care helps you be more present, patient, and resilient
  • Neglecting it can lead to burnout, stress, and physical health issues
  • Caring for yourself strengthens your ability to care for others sustainably

Self-care looks different for everyone. For some, it’s reading a book. For others, it’s movement, nature, or time with loved ones. The key is making it a non-negotiable part of your routine. Additionally, self-care truly is for everyone. While it can help PREVENT mental health challenges and other illnesses, it is also essential for those who are RECOVERING from mental illness or substance use challenges. So, whether you’re a friend, co-worker, spouse, parent or leader, encourage others to get the self-care that they need as well!

One last note—self-care doesn’t have to cost a thing. We’re often sold the idea that it requires expensive investments, but that’s simply not true. Overspending on self-care can actually increase stress if it strains your budget. True self-care is about what genuinely restores you.

So let’s rewrite the narrative. Prioritizing your well-being isn’t selfish—it’s essential. The next time you hesitate to take a break, remember: You deserve care just as much as anyone else.
